The branches in France

Orbey Thélod Lamarche Montigny Lanvaudan Saint Gorgon Châtel sur Moselle
Taintrux Gelles Sermiers Fléville Juvaincourt* Moyen La Neuville-Roy

In France the main sources used to construct a genealogy are the parish registers until the revolution (1792 in practice), then the civil status registers. François 1er, by the ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts of August 1539, ordered the parish priests of France to keep registers of baptisms and burials. In 1579, the Blois ordinance added marriage registers to it.

In practice, if some priests had not waited for this obligation to keep registers from the 14th century, it is sometimes necessary to wait for the beginning of the 18th century for the law to finally apply. The result is therefore a heterogeneity of information according to the parishes. It is for this reason, that I indicate for each of the branches, the dates of establishment of the parish registers. These different acts make it possible to build the "skeleton" of the genealogy, containing only relatively brief information.

Then, one can use other documents which will make it possible to flesh out this "skeleton". Let us quote in bulk: marriage contracts, inventories after death, declarations of marriages and pregnancies, censuses sometimes used from the 14th century, etc ...

We see that we can reconstruct with a certain precision, the life of our ancestors, even the most modest. But this work is very long, and this is why a genealogy is never definitive, it is alive, since we will patiently enrich the "skeleton" of the start with the new information gathered day by day.

With regard to our large GAUDEL family, I therefore looked for the most distant ancestors in time. If we could go back far enough, perhaps we would all be descendants of the same starting GAUDEL ?

Do not dream! In fact, I have identified around twenty "departures" or "branches", some of which have died out over the centuries. Today, we can say that a 21st century GAUDEL belongs to one of the branches from the fourteen places indicated above, noting that two branches start from Orbey.

The branches in Nepal

The study of the GAUDEL genealogy of Nepal started during the summer of 2021. In November, the first page relating to Nepal was put online. It is a first step. Thank you for your precious help which will allow us to move forward together in this great research.
